Ventura Music Festival Takes on Progressive Partnerships in Economy

VENTURA, Calif.--For more than 15 years, the Ventura Music Festival has brought a steady stream of talented musicians and artists to this quiet seaside town, just 60 miles north of Los Angeles, striving to adapt and change with the economic climate in order to maintain funding for its outstanding programming.
Most recently, the festival, a nonprofit 501(3)(c), was awarded a $50,000 grant by the Irvine Foundation under its Creative Connections Fund for its 2009 and 2010 seasons to increase festival diversity through crossover performances, events, and education outreach. Musicians such as Branford Marsalis, Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D’Rivera, and upcoming on May 2, classical guitar virtuosos The Romero Family, reflect the diverse Southern California market.

It is through creative fundraising and searching for strategic grants that helps keep this unique music festival growing as the arts are being left behind with the economic climate.

“The Ventura Music Festival strives to bring world-class musicians to our community and we plan to continue honoring the diversity of music, art and culture from around the world,” said Cheryl Heitmann, executive director of the Ventura Music Festival.

To help its biggest fundraiser of the year, the Ventura Music Festival invited Kathi Carey, actress, writer and director of the short film “Worth,” to screen at its upcoming art auction on March 14. The film’s subject is a weathered violin that is passed over for bidding at an auction until, unexpectedly, a janitor picks up the violin and plays beautiful music, creating a bidding frenzy for the now priceless instrument. The film was most recently shown during the Sundance Film Festival and has won awards at both the La Femme International Film Festival and Anchorage International Film Festival.
Will the film entice bidders to see the “worth” of 15 “Musical Chairs,” each crafted by local artisans coming to auction to raise funds for the progressive festival? Festival organizers hope so.
